How to run manual shifter cables and upgrade cable connections:
An important step in my conversion from automatic to manual was to obtain a set of manual shifter cables (there are two) and run them from my shifter plate to my transmission in the engine bay. The automatic also has a shifter cable but it is totally different and cannot be re-used. To run them I needed to enlarge the hole in the firewall. I also decided to upgrade the end connections with brass bushings for a more solid shift feel. The install was straightforward and simple.
After everything was bolted up I took the car for a spin around the block. I noticed that it was almost impossible to shift into second and fourth gear (selector down). After looking at the shift link connections I realized that the shift selector arm had been bent. I needed to bend it back into shape using my big vise and a monkey wrench.
