Stiffening up your steering:
If you are experiencing a rattle or play in your steering, chances are your steering rack needs a rebuild. This job is relatively easy, all you need is a good solid vise, hand tools, and some molybdenum grease. The parts that will probably need replacement are the plastic rack bushing, both steering rack boots, the claw washers, inner and outer tie rod ends. If you are on a budget, inspect each component for wear and only replace those that exhibit excessive play.
To access and remove the steering rack the cross-member needs to be removed. I noticed that mine had been bent (most likely from hitting something large), so I replaced it. I also replaced the rubber bushings that hold the rack to the chassis with stiff urethane units.
